Recreation

Just like your living room at home, the Junior Common Room (JCR) is the main social hub of the College. This spacious and comfy room, complete with luxurious leather Chesterfield sofas, is the ideal place to spend a lazy Sunday morning, read the newspaper and enjoy a tea or coffee (the kitchenette is right next door). If you’re an avid reader, look no further than the bookcase in the JCR – there’s a selection of recently released novels, which you’re welcome to borrow. There’s also a good selection of board games on offer.

In addition, the JCR is home to both a pool table and a table tennis table, and it’s never hard to find a willing opponent. There’s also a piano in one corner, and many generations of St Mary’s students have enjoyed a spontaneous sing-along – if you’re fortunate enough to find a pianist relaxing in the JCR!

The TV Room is a separate space available to all students, so there’s no need to miss out on your favourite programs while you’re living at College.

The Frewin Room is a special room, mostly reserved for conferences and functions; however, it is equipped with Foxtel and a large screen, so we will occasionally gather in here to watch a game or a special event! It is also the place where we celebrate our College Masses, host the JCR ‘jam’ once per year, as well as hold public lectures and college information sessions. The Melbourne University Choral Society (MUCS) gather in here each week for their rehearsals and their glorious sounds resonate through the cloisters and courtyard!

Our lovely Courtyard is a beautiful space for quiet, passive activities such as reading, having a cuppa or quiet study. If want to have a brief, social kick-to-kick or do something more active, West Garden is the perfect place.

Feel like something more energetic? The University’s sporting facilities are right on your doorstep – only a 1-minute walk away. What’s more, your College fees actually include a membership to Melbourne University Sport. This gives you privileged access to gym equipment, an indoor-heated 25m pool and a wide range of group fitness classes, including pump, boxing and yoga. This means that you and your College friends can socialise, keep fit and have fun without having to spend any extra money.
